Depart Johannesburg for the Eastern Free State. Arrive Golden Gate.

Optional visit to the Basotho Cultural Village

In the Golden Gate Highlands National Park experience the beauty of the most amazing sandstone rock formations. This 11 600 hectares of unique environment is true highland habitat, providing home to a variety of mammals including black wildebeest, eland, blesbok, oribi, springbok and Burchell’s zebra – and birds, including the rare bearded vulture (lammergeier) and the equally rare bald ibis, which breed on the ledges in the sandstone cliffs.

Sit back with a beer and enjoy the scenery or for the more energetic a chance to go for a hike.

Lunch at the hotel or depart for Clarens.

Clarens was laid out in the foothills of the Rooiberge and named for the village in Switzerland where President Paul Kruger died in 1904 while in exile. It is known as the artists’ town and the jewel of the Free State. This is a wonderful little village full of delightful shops, art galleries and its own brewery, whose brewer has a passion for micro brewed beer.  The well-known SA artist Frans Claerhout lived in the area and you will find some of his works in the numerous galleries.
