Namaqualand Flower Tour departing Cape Town

Day 1  Cape Town to Clanwilliam

Travel along the west coast and through the West Coast National Park, where the Langebaan Lagoon is the focal point. Thousands of seabirds roost on sheltered islands and the salt marches are home to vast concentrations of migrant waders from the northern hemisphere. During spring the Park is embroidered with a tapestry of multi-hued flowers. Drive along and through the Cederberg Wilderness Area with its dramatic peaks, precipitous, orange rock walls and bizarre rock formations. This area is a center of plant species richness which includes 97 families, 409 genera and 1778 species. Enjoy a wonderful guided interpretative tour on a Rooibos Tea Farm and learn more about the indigenous flora. The Red Bush from which the world famous Rooibos Teas is produced, is only to be found in the Cederberg Mountains.

Accommodation Clanwilliam Lodge, Clanwilliam, or similar.

Included Dinner.

Day 2  Nieuwoudtville

To fully experience what this very unique area has to offer, we spend a day in the Nieuwoudtville area. Taking in the treasures we will visit the Glacial Rock Striations which date back 280 million years, the Quiver Tree forest which is the largest and southern most colony of Aloe dichotoma, just 25 km north of Nieuwoudtville and the waterfall in the Doring River. Also a drive through the Matjiesfontein Flower route where a kaleidoscope of brilliant spring flowers carpet the veld.

Accommodation Vanrhynsdorp Resort, Vanrhynsdorp or similar.

Included Breakfast and dinner.

Day 3  To Kamieskroon

We leave Vanrynsdorp driving through the “Knersvlakte”, an area that seems like a wasteland at first sight, but has in fact one of the richest succulent populations on earth.  Breakfast will be at the Knersvlakte Spens.  After breakfast we will explore the vast quartz fields on a private farm where we will see the interesting, minute plant life that has adapted to these extreme conditions, an ecosystem that mostly goes unseen by the uninformed. Most of these plants are so rare that they are found nowhere else in the world. We really get our noses to the ground, as we may even find some of these rare plants in flower!

Another highlight is a visit to the Wildflower Reserve at Skilpad, now part of the major Namaqua National Park. We will spend the afternoon under the excellent guidance of a fourth generation Namaqualander with intimate knowledge of the area, its veldlore and history. Not only is Lita in high demand by botany specialists from all over the world, she is also a very endearing person. She will draw our attention to many small beauties, mostly missed by flower seekers that simply drive by. She will get us out of the vehicle to experience the veld, the wonderful smells and sights.

Accommodation Daisy Country Lodge or similar.

IncludedBreakfast and dinner.

Day 4  Springbok, Nababeep and Goegap

Today we view the northern part of the region, including Springbok, Nababeep and Concordia. An area of massive rock domes and interesting mining history, combined with flower viewing. We will stop for tea at the popular, history filled Springbok Café, a landmark in Springbok, which is sure to take us back in time. As a contrast to the fields of flowers we have seen, we visit the Goegap Nature Reserve, normally an arid mountain desert. This region rarely gets rain, and the contrast is most interesting. If, however, they did get timeous rain, the desert opens up like magic into a flower paradise. For lunch we will be treated to a picnic to round off the very interesting day.

Accommodation  Daisy Country Lodge or similar.

Included  Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner.

Day 5  Kamieskroon Region

Early departure for Strandfontein, a small sea side village situated at the mouth of the Olifants River, a piece of heaven on earth. The sandy cliff’s provide excellent lookout points for whale watchers. Lunch and wine tasting at Fryers Cove, a winery closest to the ocean in South Africa. The vines are planted eight hundred meters from shore and twenty meters above sea level, resulting in the prominent and unique flavor and character of Fryer’s Cove wine. After lunch a leisurely hike to enjoy the vegetation and beautiful area.

Accommodation  Van Eeden Accommodation or similar.

Included Breakfast, lunch, wine tasting and dinner.

Day 6  Return to Cape Town
